what's better to buy for my kitchen, a coffee maker or an espresso maker?
I don't know much about either one when it comes to making it myself! what is more versatile? which is faster? cheaper to make? and easier for on the go? and do you use the same grinds for espresso as for coffee? help! I'm lost!
One thing people rarely realize, espresso is coffee so you can make both with the same device. But a coffee maker can't make espresso.
That leaves making coffee from espresso (called an Americano) by adding hot water. The simplest way to make a quality espresso is with a stove-top moka pot (see the links). As it doesn't need as fine a grind as machine made espresso, a moka pot can be used with regular pre-ground or (better yet) coffee ground fresh with a relatively inexpensive grinder.
If you use a machine, you can use the exact same beans as regular coffee (although many people use blends for different flavor results) but a much finer grind than drip coffee. I use the exact same grinder setting for my moka pot as my Chemex manual drip.
